Who We Are

Since 2015, the members of our core team have been engaging meaningfully with the Bahá'í community on the topic of Queerness through a Bahá'í lens. Prior to this current effort, some engaged with the issue personally, others through scholarly study, and others through the creation of spaces for deepening and support. In 2021, we came together to begin a broader, more collective approach to our work, which resulted in the launch of A Single Heart in 2022.

Broadly, the project aims to address an array of issues related to Queerness and the Bahá'í Cause, from the existence of prejudice within the Bahá'í community, to tension regarding Bahá'í law and institutional policy, the need for a more sustainable path through the Cause for Queer believers, and the potential for applying Bahá'í teachings and laws to Queer issues in society at large. We believe that Bahá'u'lláh's teachings are one of the greatest means for positive social transformation.

Our efforts stand on the shoulders of (1) the enormous effort the Bahá'í community has unleashed globally over the last several decades in raising communities that apply to ever greater measure Bahá'u'lláh's teachings, and more importantly (2) on the efforts of Queer Bahá'ís over a century who have applied much energy and struggle to reconcile and harmonize their Queerness with their faith.

Our core team is composed entirely of Bahá'ís in either belief or membership in the Bahá'í Community. Our project aims to work with Bahá'í individuals, communities, and institutions towards our aims. Although we are not an agency or team appointed or formed by an institution and do not report to any institution, we have  made every effort to collaborate with and assist institutions on Queer issues, and we are hopeful about the future possibilities on this front.

Some content will be geared exclusively to Bahá'ís (but open to all), while others will be written with the wider community in mind. We have and always will be open minded to drawing learnings and guidance from sources outside the Bahá'í experience. If you are not familiar with the Bahá'í Cause, we strongly encourage you to visit www.bahai.org and other sources both online and in your local community, as this will greatly assist your understanding of the content on our site.
